I would NEVER teach ANY Religion to my KID!

Why Exposure is not Indoctrination

By: Lydia M. Crabtree

I have a grip about Neo-Pagan Parents and it has to do with an overwhelming sentiment of irresponsibility when it comes to the raising and education of their children.

A gentleman from Gather.com summed it up for me.

I have followed and participated in Wicca for twenty some odd years. I do wear a pendant about my neck, but the altar and necessities are set up in a separate and private room, and I do not intend to introduce my son to it until he has reached the age of reasoning, if he so wishes.

Post on Gather.com

Fundamentally, I agree that when Tree Bear reaches the age of reason, it is the time to start asking him what faith he will be serious about and how serious he wants to be about it.

I hear from parents all the time that they do not wish to 'shove' their religion down their child's throat. They tell me they want their children to have 'freedom of choice' about what spiritual path they want to involve themselves in.

However, do people who are long time, devoted Wiccans, Witches or Neo-Pagans really create an environment that would permit their children to be Christians? Pa-leeeese!

Children are learning from you whether you are consciously teaching them or not.  They can hear all the time. They are listening, all the time. To that end we should seriously assess what we are shielding our children from and why.

The Age of Reason is Now

If you have children and you spend time with them, you are very aware that the 'age of reason' is always developing.  I have watched my own children and Goddess Children go from confusion to comprehension sometimes in a matter of seconds.

I had a professor when I was at college ask me to supper at her house. I went and in her living room was a floor to ceiling book shelf, built into the wall complete with a rolling staircase. Examining the bookcase, I found children's books on the lower shelves and as you worked your way up, the books also grew up.  I asked her about it.

She told me that if her children could reach a book, then they could read the book and ask questions about it.  "Their height is what they need to grow into, both physically and intellectually."

I noticed; however, that there were themes throughout.  There was a religion section on the lowest shelf filled with books about different faiths and practices specifically geared toward young children. As you went up the books grew in intellectual age; however, the subjects repeated themselves.

My professor was making an excellent point, education should start immediately and grow as the child's ability to understand develops.  However, education should never be limited.

Religious Education doesn't have to mean indoctrination.

If you claim you are serious about giving your children a freedom of choice, then it is your job to afford them choices and support the exploration of those choices.

Tree Bear has been to Buddhists retreats and monasteries, Christian Churches of various denominations, Earth Based Celebrations and Pow-Wows where sacred dance was involved.   I have read parts of  The Bible, The Koran, The Book of Mormon, the Teachings of Buddha and read to him the Charge of the Goddess

There has been plenty of room for him to shape his own belief.  I haven't pushed one agenda over another. When Tree Bear wanted to go to church, I took him without hassle or question. When he had questions about church I told him what the church might say, not what I believed. Then I asked him his opinion.

In doing this, Tree Bear can explore all religions and keep the decision for himself.  Education is not indoctrination and education always gives people MORE choices not less.

Everyone needs to have belief, know what the belief is and be able to defend that belief.

How many ________ (fill in any religion) have you met that could not defend why it is that they believe like they do?  Do you really want you child to be like that?

We live in a world dominated by Four Major religions: Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Muslim. Is your child going to have to live in that world?

Of course they are!  You would never send a warrior into a battle field without the proper Intel.  Why in Goddess's Name, would we send our children out into the world unarmed with an understanding of the faiths they are going to deal with?

Why would we send out our children without an understanding of our own faith!?!

Education allows children to begin to understand the beliefs of others and prepares them for when they met someone of another faith.  When my son meets a Buddhist monk, he gives the appropriate greeting.  When he is in circle, he knows to call the High Priest and High Priestess, Lord and Lady.  When he meets a Catholic Priest, he understand why he wears a collar and what it means about his life.  When he attends church, he

knows what the sacrament is and can decide for himself whether or not he wishes to partake. In a

Catholic Church, he knows how to decline appropriately.  He has learned respect and that respect was gained through education.

We have a chance to teach peace through understanding.  Our Religion is in a very unique position to do this.

Because our religion has a tendency to have a live and let live attitude and views the world as a place of endless connections, we could raise an army of children for peace.

Tree Bear was in 2nd grade when Parth joined his class.  One day Parth came to class with a red dot and ash on his head.  Some of the Christian children began to tease him. One child began to tell Parth that he was going to die and go to hell.  Parth had no idea what she was talking about.

Tree Bear told me he told Parth, "Don't worry about it. You don't have to believe in hell, it is just what they believe in."

The little evangelist got very very upset with Tree Bear and he turned to her and said, "No, you don't understand. You can believe what you want to and I can believe what I want to and Parth can believe what he wants to.  It's o.k."

How much safer would our world be today if more parents encouraged that attitude with their children?

I am made up of my beliefs and I want my children and Goddess Children to KNOW me.

What I know about my mother, I figured out when I found a Bible of hers from college. In the notes and notations she had made in that book was laid to bare for me who she was as a person, not as a mother. The fact is, without that book, I would not understand my mother as a woman because certainly her beliefs, doubts and fears were never a topic of discussion with me.

I don't want Tree Bear to have to wait until I die to inherit my personal Book of Shadows and suddenly know and understand me.  I would like him to know and understand me now.  The thing is I cannot be known without understanding what I have faith in. My life as a witch is not something I can sever myself from.

I am not ashamed.

The number one reason I expose Tree Bear to my personal spirituality is, I am not ashamed.  My sacred religion is just as important as any other.  It is just as valid and its benefits and miracles are just as easy to identify.

I came to realize some time ago that the reason for all the misinformation about Witchcraft is that we are all hiding in the broom closet.  I recalled a sermon I heard once about sin.  The preacher was explaining that you could identify sin in yourself when you hid it.  Hiding, he said, was a symptom of the belief that what you were doing was wrong.

I am doing nothing wrong and I am never going to give my son that impression. I am not ashamed.

Creating Your Own Tradition: Where to start?

By: Rev. Crystal Blanton

There are many Wiccans and Pagans who find that they don’t fit into the already existing traditions like the Gardenarian or Alexandrian tradition.  I found that I related to a lot in each tradition but not 100% of any one tradition.

So what happens when you find yourself in a different category than those you have to choose from?  Many are afraid of stepping out on their own and creating something themselves but it may be something worth thinking about.  Some of the beauty of Paganism is that you have the freedom to navigate your own religious and spiritual path.   So why are so many afraid to take the step into creating their own tradition?

There are many sub-groups within Wicca that are not so favorable to the idea of creating your own tradition or initiating oneself.  Does this attitude intimidate some people from taking that step?  I think so.  I have found so many intelligent and talented pagans that don’t fit into any one category and would rather not define themselves than take the risk of being judged for their beliefs.

Why do we discriminate against each other?  One of the beauties of this path is the individual freedoms that we have to find what feels right for us.

There is a point I would like to make here.  Many times there will be a small group of people who hold such strong opinions and judgments towards something and due to people’s fears we inadvertently adapt our lifestyles around others judgments.  Interesting isn’t it?

Let’s think about it is terms of racism.  People of color are so afraid of racism and the unfair judgments of others, that they condition their lives to deal with what may happen.  Let’s look at prejudice against overweight people.  There are beautiful large people who are too afraid to go out or go to a social event because of the judgments that might happen to them.   Let’s look at people who are under-educated by societal standards.  There are some brilliant people who will not apply themselves or apply for a job that they would excel at because of the fears of being judged and in turn condition themselves to feel inferior.

Is religion the same, of course it is.   There are Pagans and Wiccan who are afraid to discuss their tradition or their beliefs because they are not from a British Wiccan Tradition or something simular.  I am here to tell you that concept is crap and you should feel free and proud of who you are and what you believe.

I personally don’t care if you come from the tradition of Days of our lives or Harry Potter, I only care that you respect me and my spiritual choices.   Who am I to judge your spiritual choices?  And if you don’t begin to stand up and speak for yourself, the scales will continue to be tipped to one side where the potential geniuses of Wicca go unheard.

Find your footing and stand up.

I found that I was able to really expand my reality and dig deeper into my spiritual beliefs when I had to answer some fundamental questions in creating a tradition.  What do I believe?  What does it mean?  How did I get there?  Spending quality time and picking apart my spiritual beliefs in order to write them on paper has been a note worthy experience.  My close spiritual sister and I have had the privilege of sitting for hours and discussing key points in our spirituality in order to put it on paper.  And the things we have learned in this process have been invaluable.

I have found that this process has helped me to learn in a different way than when I was studying a degree system, it didn’t stretch me spiritually the same way.

Interesting, isn’t it?  Are the wheels in your head turning?

Even if you are trained in a tradition and are completely comfortable with it, it is good to question yourself.  Don’t miss any opportunity to expand your understanding of your beliefs.

Let me interject a clause here.  This article is not meant to talk against British Wiccan Traditions or any other “traditional” Wiccan tradition.  This is just meant to push the envelope and provoke thought.

Here are some suggestions for those who are in a place where they want to explore creating and documenting their own tradition.

bulletJournaling is a source of good information.  When we are able to journal our work and beliefs, it can give us some good materials to pull from.

bulletCollect rituals, spells, meditations, pictures and miscellaneous spiritual information that calls to you.  It is a good place to start finding what resonates with your inner sense of spirituality by collecting and piecing together things that have spiritual meaning for you.

bulletRead, Read, Read.  Find as many books as you can find on the subjects that interest you and actually read them.  It can help find pieces to the puzzle that may have been missing before.

bulletWrite, Write, Write.  Write what you feel, believe, think or research.  Write any and everything.  At a later date you will be able to piece things together based on your own writing and thoughts.

bulletPractice, Practice, Practice.  The more you are experiencing the energy and spirit of the divine, the more you can find what feels right to you.  Perform rituals, meditation, spellwork, kitchen witchery, etc.  Find your nitch and live your path.  Think, how can you find if it works for you if you don’t try?  And don’t forget to record your experiences too.

bulletAnd last for now but definitely not least, organize.  Find a system that works for you and begin the process of organizing all these things into something you can make sense of.  The actual medium you chose doesn’t matter.  Some of your choices can be an electronic BOS, a physical BOS, scrapbook, blog, magical card box, etc.

Creating tradition isn’t hard; a true Wiccan is living their tradition every day.  Documenting and organizing a tradition is something different, now that takes work.  But the rewards are worth it.  Good luck and don’t forget to enjoy your path to self discovery.
