Pagan Parenting:  Finding Values

Morris Institute for Human Values by Tom Morris. I (Lydia) have had the privilege and pleasure of conversing with Morris and have found his books inspiring and fun to read.  It is true if you read If Harry Potter Ran General Electric you will find a passage that seems to put down Neo-Pagans.  Trust me, Morris did not mean to insult us.

I'm so sorry that you were offended by that sentence.  I was just being playful with that.  I'm always joking with people, and have never given a talk where I wasn't kidding around all through it, despite the serious stuff.

There I was trying to assure the fanatical anti-Potter people and their sympathizers that there is nothing to fear in the boy wizard, first distinguishing him from a rival religious perspective (your own) and then from an evil, non-religious form of satanism.  People confuse the two, very wrongly, and confuse Harry with either or both.  I would characterize the religious right just as playfully, if I had occasion to, but didn't.  However, you'll note that I have a lot of text critiquing their perspective on Harry, but none critiquing the legitimate concerns and beliefs of Wicca.

Your kind email has made me realize that I really should have written a couple of more sentences making clear what Wicca at its best is, even though that still has about as much as Methodism or Pentecostalism to do with Harry.  I shouldn't just play with a Yale inspired caricature.  I didn't mean it to be offensive.  And it never occurred to me that Wicca people weren't interested in Harry or that you all would not see the book, I had just not been sufficiently sensitive to how that sentence could sound!  My mistake!  I'm sorry.  I was writing the book too fast!!!!!!!  No excuse, just a thought about how I could let this slip.
